Now available to download on NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV, Super Meat Boy is a puzzle-filled platforming adventure that casts players as the titular Meat Boy, who must complete levels in order to save his girlfriend Bandage Girl from an evil scientist.

Here's a look at why Super Meat Boy is definitely worth checking out on SHIELD Android TV.

Classic retro style charm

With Super Meat Boy, indie developer Team Meat wanted to create an experience that captures the retro-style charm and challenging platforming gameplay of early 90s video game classics like Super Mario Bros. 2, Ghosts 'N Goblins, and Mega Man.

Shield

In keeping with early 90s-era platforming, simplicity is the key in Super Meat Boy. The story is classic platform fare. Super Meat Boy has to rescue his girlfriend Bandage Girl who has been kidnapped by the evil Dr. Fetus. He does so by travelling from one end of a series of maze-like levels to the other to reach the love of his life. Meat Boy can run left and right, jump, and perform multiple jumps by bouncing off walls.

Challenging levels that will give you the meat sweats

Super Meat Boy is a game that requires precision and lightning-fast reactions. The environments are claustrophobic and contain numerous narrow platforms and because Meat Boy is very quick and ultra-responsive, it's all too easy to make mistakes and have to start all over again.

Some levels add on the pressure by automatically scrolling, forcing Meat Boy to keep moving for fear of being forced off the edge of the screen and killed. Then there are hazards like crumbling platforms, circular saw blades and cannonballs, all of which put your reflexes to the test.

It plays great on SHIELD Android TV

Super Meat Boy is one of the best indie games out there and it’s a great addition to NVIDIA SHIELD's rapidly expanding library of games in every genre. And even though Super Meat Boy boasts a visual style inspired by beloved classic games from the past, its retro-style action and charm still look great on SHIELD Android TV.

Play as secret characters from other big indies

Super Meat Boy is the game that keeps on giving. As well as celebrating classic games, it also gives a nod to other present day indie games.

Success in the game enables you to warp to special bonus levels where you can unlock characters from other games including Tim from Braid, Goo Ball from World of Goo, Josef from Machinarium, and Steve from Minecraft.

Each of these characters have unique abilities from their parent games so you can attempt to play Super Meat Boy levels in a range of different ways.

Super Meat Boy Unblocked

It’s funny, back in early 2012 is when we first began to hear rumors that Super Meat Boy would launch for Android, and here we are a little over four years later with the official title finally making its way to Google Play. Thanks to the folks at NVIDIA, Super Meat Boy is launching exclusively for the SHIELD Android TV set-top box, bringing the pixelated platformer to the masses for the price of $14.99.

If you are looking for a premise, it’s sort of an odd one. Super Meat Boy (a little cube of meat) is out to save his girlfriend who is entirely wrapped in bandages, from an evil tux-wearing fetus inside of a jar. Yeah, it’s odd, but thankfully, anyone playing this game knows it’s not about the storyline.

Gameplay is essentially what you would find on classic NES titles, requiring ultra-fast reflexes and dexterity. With the added benefit of the SHIELD Controller, though, you should be able to master the movements quickly enough. And trust me, that skill will come in handy when you go up against the boss battles.

Priced at $14.99, there is no doubt you are paying a premium, but the game is filled with 300+ single player levels, tons of epic boss fights, a level editor, “unlockable secrets,” warp zones, and secret characters. Lots of fun to be had.

Go check it out right now.

Update: The game appears to be playable on the SHIELD Tablet, too. Woot woot.
